As a maker of handcrafted journals, Julie is drawn to the concept of creating journals as artworks that will survive the passage of time and be read and enjoyed by future generations in centuries to come. She meticulously handcrafts each journal and then develops the content with artworks and her own words handwritten in decorative lettering, creating unique ‘one of a kind’ journals in which she ruminates on life and flowers.
Inspired by her love of journaling, handmade books, art, calligraphy and flowers, Julie’s work is influenced by illuminated manuscripts, florilegia and early botanical sketchbooks with their glorious illustrations, page decorations and handwritten calligraphy. She creates her own contemporary interpretations of these elements in her journals.
Julie draws from her eclectic stash of paper, fabric and embellishments to make each journal, and designs and paints her own original endpapers that are bound into each volume.
She is fortunate to work from a straw bale studio in the heart of her garden in rural Victoria, Australia.
