Let’s enjoy a breath of fresh air and the beauty of nature to guide us through these difficult times.
The tall slender elegant delphiniums, with their enduring beauty over the summer months and into autumn, are pretty much the only thing left standing in their home among fellow cornflowers, foxgloves and lupins in my garden. The scene of devastation seems to mirror the chaos in the world at present, punctuated by a few souls who stand strong, steady and compassionate, reminding us that the awe-inspiring beauty and wisdom of nature can always be relied upon to carry us through the crisis and teach us valuable lessons.
Deep purple delphinium flower spikes bloom all summer, redolent with the energy of a strong female presence dressed in flowing velvet robes. The eye of their blossoms, with beguiling long dark brown lashes, keep watch over the floral families sharing their community, ensuring that all is well. But as the winds of change approach near the end of the season, they begin to lean under the pressure of caring for the flock. Turbulence is ahead, and as carers, they also need support to maintain their strength to carry them through.
At the beginning of autumn, vivid royal blue delphinium flowers begin to appear along stately stems, opening tentatively at first, closer to the safety of the earth, and creeping slowly upwards to reach grand glory at their full height. This is the colour of intuition, the inner knowing of the third eye, the mature phase of the dark side of the moon ruled by the wise old Goddess Hecate. Perhaps in her wisdom she saw a crisis looming in the shadows, a hunch that all was not well, a message that remained unheeded in the mystery surrounding intuitive knowing. But even in the darkness, pure and clear knowledge emerges in the white eye of the flower, streaked with the last remnants of brown lashes from the time before the crisis.
It’s only in the last few weeks that the sky-blue delphiniums have joined their counterparts, growing bulbous dolphin shaped buds opening like a breath of fresh air in the autumn sunshine. The colourful sepals open to reveal soft inner petals surrounding the heart of the bloom, pure in their centre, illuminated by a hint of sunshine and azure splashes reflected from the midday sky. Autumn is a time of quiet, leaves gently falling as we bare our soul whilst gathering spiritual food to nourish us through times ahead, but the lovely sky-blue blooms remind us that there is always beauty and sunshine in our lives if we choose to see and feel its warming presence.
Flowers are always present in our lives and nature is the one constant that we can always rely upon to lift our spirits, so let’s stand strong, steady and compassionate as we face these uncertain times, knowing that they will also pass.
